Meet the Author… Juli D. Revezzo

I contacted Juli when I saw her promoting her book, The Dragon’s Seamstress, on Twitter. You know me, I’m a sucker for dragons. Not only does her new book have dragons in it, it’s the fifth of a series about witches. As I’m writing a series about witches at the moment, so it doubled my interest in Juli’s writing. Let’s find out more about her and the Antique Magic series.

Oh, before I forget, I’ll let you in on some inside information; Fort Pickens, in the photo below, features in her Antique Magic series!

Juli D. Revezzo

Biography

Juli D. Revezzo loves fantasy and Celtic mythology and writing stories with all kinds of fantastical elements. She is the author of the historical romances, Courting the Stationmaster’s Daughter, House of Dark Envy, steampunk romances, Vesta’s Clockwork Companions and Watchmaker’s Heart, and the fantasy Gothic romance Lady of the Tarot, The Dragon Seamstress, part of the Antique Magic paranormal series, and much more. She is also a member of the Independent Author Network and the Magic Appreciation Tour.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been making up stories all my life, but I wrote my first actual novel 30-ish years ago, a science fantasy manuscript that will probably never see the light of day (if I’m lucky!).

What does your typical writing day look like?

I write all day long. I write in spurts during the day, so it might be four hours altogether one day, it might be ten the next. Some days I focus on historical aspects of the stories, and work on the romance side of things, sometimes I want to torture a character and so pop open the fantasy manuscripts.

Pen or typewriter or computer?

Both pen, and computer. These days, I’ve been using the notepad feature on my phone and speaking into it. It’s not efficient because I end up having to do a lot of clean up when my phone misinterprets what I’ve told it, but it gets the words down on days I can’t sit at the computer.

Do you have a goals of a certain number of words a week, or when inspiration strikes?

It really depends on the book and my physical state. I try to do no more than 1000 words a day, so, 5,000-7000 a week? But sometimes, I’ll write more if I’m really inspired, or about 500 if my carpal tunnel has flared up.

What is your favorite genre? Why?

I cut my teeth on fantasy and have never lost my love for it even though, in my college years, I added a love of 19th century literature. Why? I like the possibilities magic brings to the world (any world, be it a made up one, or ours). And being steeped in 19th century Gothic literature, as well as fantasy, I like dark fantasy for the depth it can give to the story. You don’t know whether the good guys are going to win, and I think that makes it far more relatable. (But then, I also write romance, and you know those require a happily ever after). I try to deliver some kind of happy ending with most of my works, but sometimes, the bloodthirsty muse gets her claws into me. >:) If you ever read my novellas, (Fifty Measly Bucks, Bicycle Requiem, Sing a Mournful Melody), you’ll see what I mean.

What are some day jobs that you have held?

I was a student assistant in my college’s art museum for several years and the work helped me in creating the work Caitlin and Trevor do in the Antique Magic series, when they’re investigating the provenance of the antiques people bring to them. That museum also became the model for a gallery in my fantasy romance series Celtic Stewards Chronicles.

If you were deserted on an island, which three people would you want to have with you and why?

  1. One fictional character from your book:  Either Caitlin, or Trevor. Caitlin because she’s resourceful, but Trevor, well, he’s a woodworker and if anyone could get those coconuts open, it would be him.
  2. One fictional character from any other book: Gandalf, because he might be able to turn those coconuts into nice feasts.
  3. One famous person that is not a family member or friend: Hm… That’s a good question. Probably someone skilled in survival, like Shackelton.  I read the books/saw the mini-series about him, years ago. Impressive, I must say.

Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?

The Antique Magic series is an urban fantasy series that centers around Caitlin, a Florida woman who comes to realize she is a witch who, under a request from her family’s ancestral gods, helps the family with a curse laid on them centuries ago. Subsequently she—and with her, her husband Trevor—becomes a helper for ghosts, gods, and other beings (like dragons!) dealing with similar problems, some hanging on, throughout time. Each encounter brings Caitlin and Trevor new insights into the intersection between the real world around them and the Otherworld, as well as into their own journey embracing their identities and powers as witches. The latest book, THE DRAGON’S SEAMSTRESS, finds them assisting an impatient dragon with his magical problem while hosting a gathering for their mundane family who are unaware of their day-to-day life.

Do you want each book to stand on its own or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

In the Antique Magic series, the books build off one another. This most recent release in that series, The Dragon’s Seamstress, is the most standalone of them. Or at least, according to some readers.  But every series book I write, I think, will always need some reliance on what came before it.

Out of the protagonists you’ve written about so far, which one do you feel you relate to the most?

Caitlin (from Antique Magic). Because I think she’s the most like me, stubborn, steadfast, and curious, but also has the same foibles and as much as she likes her life, she loves her solitude.

But also, her mentor Michela, because I am a total armchair scholar, and I wish I was as good at math as she is.

Thanks so much, Juli, for sharing infor about your Antique Magic series with us. It sounds very intriguing!

Since Juli is promoting her latest book, The Dragon’s Seamstress, at the moment, here’s the blurb:

The Dragons’ Seamstress

by Juli D. Revezzo

Since Caitlin and Trevor vowed to assist the Otherworld and opened their enchanted antique shop, they’ve seen many strange things. But now, someone comes in asking for a mundane item: kitschy “witches” brooms. Has their magical life returned to normal?

As the couple prepares to host a family gathering, fate intervenes and something they’ve never seen before roars into their life: A creature out of Welsh legend and fantasy: A blundering, somewhat underdeveloped dragon—not at all the type of dragon they ever expected to meet. Forced to undertake his unique challenge, Caitlin and Trevor are perplexed by his demands, but the magical beast is certain they are the only witches who can help him.

Doing so might unlock an ancient hidden secret. Refusing might destroy them.
