Goblin Mode and Links to My Books for Christmas

Having told you last week that a dictionary had proclaimed gaslight as its word of the year, another dictionary – the Oxford English Dictionary, no less – has announced its own to much greater fanfare. This despite the fact that goblin mode is two words not one, and many people (including me) admitted that they had never heard of it (them?) before.

Unlike gaslight, goblin mode does not have an interesting literary back story. Gaslight stems from a psychological drama called Gas Light that was written in1938 and subsequently made into a famous film – Gaslight. Goblin mode however is said to come from a tweet in 2009 about Kanye West which doctored a comment made by his ex-girlfriend, Julia Fox, to the effect that he ‘didn’t like when I went goblin mode.’ This was taken to mean behaving in a self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, greedy way. Fox denies ever making this comment, but the tweet went viral and the phrase was resurrected after the Covid lockdowns as reflecting a way of life adopted by many of us – and which many of us are still reluctant to put aside and return to ‘normality.’

And so, to make a rather laboured connection with my last paragraph, to the purchasing links for my books. You might like to buy one or more of these for yourself and others in time for Christmas, because reading them will give you the perfect excuse to remain, sartorially at least, in goblin mode whilst you curl up on the sofa with a glass of mulled wine and a bag of peanuts to hand.
