When Brave Men Shudder

Library Visit

When I visited the local library a few weeks ago, I received a pamphlet. It was telling me about author Mike Shepherd doing a book presentation for When Brave Men Shudder, a book about the origins of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Of course I had to attend!

I got myself two tickets (they were free, but you still had to get them) and surprised my husband with a little outing together last night. I also met two of the ladies of the local writers’ club we used to have. It was great to see them again! There were also two of our film club people and several more people. This was a great turnout for our library. Normally we’re lucky to get four people to attend 😀

Mike Shepherd

Mike told us he is a geologist-turned-writer and local of Cruden Bay. For the non-local people; this is a small town between Stonehaven (in the north) and Aberdeen (in the south) on the east coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Like most Cruden Bay residents, Mike is proud of the fact that Dracula was written here and wanted to know more about the man who wrote it; Bram Stoker.

It was interesting to hear from Mike how Stoker was influenced not only by a paper written by a Scottish lady, named Emily Gerard, titled Transylvanian Superstitions, but also a local shipwreck, his own travels, and his love for Cruden Bay. Apparently, although a London socialite, Stoker visited the remote fishing village every summer a month long for years. Mike showed us a photo of Slains Castle in its glory days (not far from Cruden Bay) and told us that many a part of it is described in Dracula. Unfortunately, it is now a ruin. Mike also told us that, even though Dracula doesn’t play in Scotland, there is a Doric (local dialect) sentence hidden in it!

Dacre Stoker

Mike met and discussed his story of Bram Stoker with Dacre Stoker, a descendant of Bram Stoker’s brother. Mike had talked to many people in Cruden Bay, learning all he could about Bram Stoker, but Dacre Stoker provided Mike with even more insights of his ancestor and has even written the introduction to the book. There are interesting photos at the back of the book of the Cruden Bay area, the castle, and the people.
