Your book sounds such a fun, romantic read, Kitty. Can you tell us what inspired you to write it?
Hello Karen, thank you so much for inviting me onto your blog to talk about Christmas and my latest book, Every Day In December. After I had finished my Cornish Village School series, I was excited to write my first ever stand-alone romance and knew I wanted to write one of three things.
- A book where each chapter was one day of a month and the book was a full month long.
- Belle’s story. She had been sitting with me as a character for a while and I really wanted to explore that whilst it is human instinct to judge people quickly, how our judgments are often far removed from the truth.
- I wanted to write Christmas! It’s my favourite season to write and I was determined to write a book with as much Christmassyness as I could cram in.
It soon occurred to me that these three things could work really well together. Belle is a character obsessed by Shakespeare but there was no reason she couldn’t be devoted to Christmas too. And if gave Rory some heavy emotional baggage that made the season something he wished to escape, then I had the makings of a perfect grumpy vs sunshine trope. And Every Day In December was born.
I can’t tell you how much fun I have had writing it and fully indulging my love for the season. Before I started, I made a list of all the things I love to do at this time of year and made sure I included them all. I gave the heroine a seasonal job in a Christmas decoration shop and I really threw myself into the research for Bristol-based activities as well. So every Christmassy thing that Belle does, I have done – minus the flashing hats and jumpers. I visited Tyntesfield and learnt the dances, I dragged my partner to Dickensian Improv on board the SS Great Britain and to the Bath Christmas market. Then there’s my love for Christmas carols, threading popcorn for the tree and collecting pinecones to decorate the house, all these things make me feel so cosy, I had to include them. I make mince pies endlessly through December and I used to do so many Christmas crafts with my children it’s a miracle I am not a walking, talking glitter-glue stick, so that is in as well. I also used to be a secret chocolate-gifter at my workplace, although I didn’t need to break in the way that Belle does nor need her secret crack team to help out! The only thing I haven’t done since adolescence is the tin-tray sledging, but I loved it for many years and it would be wonderful to do it again.
I felt so festive as I wrote this novel, blaring out Christmas songs as I did so and revelling in so many of my family’s favourite traditions that this book feels like my own personal testament to the season. Certainly, if readers feel as joyfully Christmassy reading it as I did writing it, I shall be a very happy author indeed.
