My thoughts
I found this novel extremely claustrophobic. With every chapter, it felt like the vice was tightening.
Stuck in the job from hell with no option but to keep at it, I felt trapped along with Rachel. In my mind, I found myself willing her to admit defeat and leave; to go home and beg Daddy for some more money. But where would the fun in that be? There was a story to tell and it was going to be told. Rachel had her reasons for not running home and I loved how her character was explored in this respect.
At times, this novel felt creepy in a supernatural way. With the backstory of the dead women in the basement and the dog, it had me looking over my shoulder as I read it in the dark early morning hours.
Dreda has a way of making normal everyday things feel sinister and for good reason, her characters in this book held secrets that I as the reader couldn’t work out. I had my theories but they changed every five minutes.
Trap Door was definitely a page turner for me as I love a psychological thriller. I think it would also appeal to readers who, like me, enjoy a little horror. Fab read!
