The Enemy Within

By Liza O’Connor

Book 3

Blurb:

From the first moment Colonel Polanski met Eliza, he fell in love. She was so enchanting and ready for love. Thus, the colonel went a bit farther than he was supposed to. He hoped to take her with him once she finished her schooling. Sadly, he soon discovered she also had a magnificent brain and was to continue her studies for many more years.

That was the plan until Eliza was beaten brutally by what she thought were her classmates. Too injured to leave her bed, she continues to worsen and only one girl tries to help her. The other girls feared they would be blamed for her injuries, so they carried her from the dorm room and tossed her in a ravine.

Once Colonel Polanski passes his psyche evaluation, proving he did not steal the fabulous young woman that he had made love to the day before, he leads the efforts to find her. While he locates her quickly, Eliza is in a very weakened state and dies on the operating table. Fortunately, the doctors were able to revive her.

In what appears to be a severe punishment, the colonel and his men are sent to the worst outpost in the entire Corp. While the men he brings with him are superb, the men currently in this fort are horrible. However, they’ll soon learn they only have two choices: become proper soldiers or feed the bears.

Colonel Lanski’s priorities are to protect the two young women with special talents and the great many talented male fliers that MAC sends to him.

To help keep them safer, MAC provides them all with new names and in Eliza’s case, she gets a whole new face.

When Colonel Lanski first arrives at the fort, he discovers the situation is in far worse disarray than he imagined, The Alaskan natives are in uproar, thousands of polar bears are attacking his fort, and the Czech Drug Cartel is their closest neighbor. Even as he tackles all these dangers, he cannot forget the worst enemy: Those within his own Corp who are trying to kill these fabulous youths solely because they are far superior to a normal human.

***

MAC, the computer that controls the SkyRyder Corp discovers that soldiers within its ranks wish to stop its Breeding Project to make superior flyers. When a great many of these special talents are murdered over a two-week span, MAC quickly gathers the remaining assets, modifies their fingerprints and alters their looks then sends them to the last place in the world that anyone would look for them.

Welcome to Fort Dismal, Alaska,

The absolute worst fort in the Americas.

EXCERPT

As the second bell rang, he removed the pencil from her hand. “You know Captain Dune will give you demerits for being late to her class.”

“She won’t if I bring her a flower and tell her it’s from you,” Eliza teased as she collected her books and ran from the class. He followed her to the door and watched her slip outside and return with a bright red peony before scampering into Captain Dune’s room. Captain Hudson smiled and shook his head.

Caroline would no doubt thank him most pleasantly for his thoughtfulness of giving her a flower, and only a fool would admit he hadn’t. Tom did not consider himself a fool. Caroline Dune was an expert when it came to pleasuring a man, and what she taught the girls in class, she practiced in real life, if she felt a captain deserved a reward.

Eliza had won him more rewards with her flowers than he had ever managed on his own. It was just as well he would be leaving once Eliza graduated this year. Without the clever girl, his relationship with Caroline was doomed. Caroline would never receive another flower since he possessed no romantic tendencies whatsoever.

He left Benjamin working on his test and walked down the hall to peek into Caroline’s room. The peony was in a vase on Caroline’s desk, and Eliza stood among the young ladies repeating their oath of honor.

“As ladies of the Corp, we pledge to use all skills we possess to improve and make the Corp strong. We proudly offer pleasure to men who prove value to the Corp, and we gladly bear highly skilled children to preserve the future of the Corp. We are the heart and womb of the Corp, and because of our efforts, the Corp will remain strong forever.”

Seeing him at the door, Eliza smiled, which caught Caroline’s eye. Caroline motioned for him to come inside. He groaned. Whatever she planned would no doubt embarrass the hell out of him.

“I really can’t. I have a student retaking his test.”

She caught his hand and pulled him inside, promising not to take long.

“Now, this captain was especially courageous today. So how do we respond?”

The young ladies all dutifully answered, “Reward him.”

Caroline laughed at his worried expression. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to embarrass you.”

However, it was a little too late for her to keep that promise.

“Any suggestion on how he should be rewarded?” The girls suggested various pleasurable ideas.

He gave Caroline a look of reproach. “I do have a student to attend to.”

She laughed softly and kissed him with great expertise. There was a time such a kiss would have made him forget all about his student, but that was several years ago when he first arrived at the school. He had grown accustomed to her perfect kisses now. When she released him, he smiled, “Thank you for such sweet pleasure.” He then nodded to the giggling ladies, gave Eliza a slightly arched eyebrow to let her know he held her responsible for this, and escaped the room.

“I wish I could have rewarded him,” Angie whispered to Eliza.

Angie was Eliza’s best friend, and she loved her dearly, except when she lusted after Captain Hudson. For some inexplicable reason, Angie’s obsession over Captain Hudson never set well with her. Her feelings for Captain Hudson were a quandary, even to herself. She liked him greatly, for he was so gentle, kind, and very patient when she became distracted with her drawings. Also, he made math interesting, which Eliza had thought to be an impossible feat. Yet, when the other girls would go on about his blond hair and blue eyes, a pit of anger would burn in her stomach and it would remain until she either left the room or changed the topic. Yes, he was easy on the eyes, but he was so much more than that!
