Shed No Tears by Caz Frear – review.

Description

Four victims.

Killer caught.

Case closed . . . Or is it?

Christopher Masters, known as ‘The Roommate Killer’, strangled three women over a two-week period in a London house in November 2012. Holly Kemp, his fourth victim, was never found.

Until now.

Her remains have been unearthed in a field in Cambridgeshire and DC Cat Kinsella and the major investigation team are called in, but immediately there are questions surrounding the manner of her death. And with Masters now dead, no one to answer them.

DCI Tessa Dyer, the lead on the 2012 case, lends the team a hand, as does DCI Steele’s old boss and mentor, the now retired Detective Chief Superintendent Oliver Cairns.

With Masters dead, Cat and the team have to investigate every lead again.

BUT IF YOU’D GOT AWAY WITH MURDER, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WHEN THE CASE IS RE-OPENED?

About Caz

‘Caz Frear is such a talent’ CASS GREEN

Caz Frear grew up in Coventry and spent her teenage years dreaming of moving to London and writing a novel. After fulfilling her first dream, it wasn’t until she moved back to Coventry thirteen years later that the writing dream finally came true. She has a first-class degree in History & Politics, which she’s put to enormous use over the years by working as a waitress, shop assistant, retail merchandiser and, for the past twelve years, a headhunter.

When she’s not agonising over snappy dialogue or incisive prose, she can be found shouting at the TV when Arsenal are playing, or holding court in the pub on topics she knows nothing about.

My thoughts

What a shocker! I love that the murder victim didn’t fit the convicted killer’s pattern when it came to the other murders he’d been convicted of. Because of that, this mystery opened with a huge hook. Did he kill Holly too? That in itself had me whizzing through the pages as I just had to know.

‘Shed No Tears’ is gritty crime at its best. The police team dynamics, banter and relationships are superbly written. Caz Frear has created a flawed but likeable character in Cat Kinsella. I was rooting for her to solve everything, including her own demons.

The relationship Cat had with her father added another fantastic layer to this book. I loved that she had to be there for him when he ended up in hospital, causing their underlying conflict to bubble up. There are plenty of suspects which kept me guessing right up to the end.

This book is definitely one to put on your must read list if you love a police procedural that moves like lightning. Grab it when you can!
