Ebook distributor PublishDrive’s monthly reports on the digital book market are continuing to see substantial rises compared with the figures for the previous year. The latest report for August 2020 shows a 69% increase in sales through PublishDrive compared with August 2019.The firm says in the fiction sector, the most popular genres were: Action & Adventure, Crime, Thriller, True Crime, Sci Fi, and Fantasy.
Non-fiction saw solid growth, especially Biographies, Body, Mind & Spirit, Business, Family & Relationships, Health & Fitness, Psychology, and Self-help. PD also says in the Business category, Business Communication, Careers, Corporate & Business History, Development, Facility Management, Investments & Securities, Mentoring & Coaching, and Quality Control-related books grew in popularity.
PublishDrive splits its business sources into four main categories:
- Retail: Major outlets that reach global readers with the usual one copy purchase business model, such as Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Google Play Books, and Kobo.
- Subscription services: Applications or stores that provide unlimited access to books for a monthly subscription fee — Scribd, Bookmate, and Dreame.
- Digital library providers: Book borrowing for not just individuals, but institutions like public libraries, schools, universities, or corporate libraries — OverDrive, Bibliotheca, Mackin, and Odilo.
- Regional stores: Outlets that cover a specific region serving a local community, such as Tolino, Chinese stores, Hungarian outlets, and German networks.
The company’s reports find that business through libraries and regional stores doubled over the last year while subscription models saw 90% growth and retailers increased by 61%.
