#MythologicalMonday: Camazotz

Camazotz is the perfect myth to learn about during the month of Halloween for Camazotz means “death bat” in the K’iche’ language. In Mesoamerica the bat was associated with night, death, and sacrifice. Some believe the ancient peoples based this Bat God on the common vampire bat. This was probably due to the fact that the bats would inhabit the caves around the sacred cenotes, which the Mesoamericans believed were portals to the underworld. In a way, Camazotz is the vampire of the Mesoamerica world.
