My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing – review.

Description

HOW WELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE PERSON YOU LOVE MOST?

Their life was just like yours. Nice house, great kids, the perfect life.

But they have a very dark secret.

You might think you’ve read stories like this before.

You’re wrong.

My thoughts

Ooh, this was a sinister read. It was creepy and skin-crawling because in part, it had me on the side of a killer at times. This book slowly and tensely builds into a shocking ending.

I really enjoyed the original viewpoint, that of a husband/father whose biggest consideration is the impact of his actions on the lives of his teenage children.

The story left me as the reader to ponder over the potential motives for these acts. We look for reasons as to why someone is the way that they are but sometimes there isn’t a reason or those reasons might not be known. Can a person simply be a sadistic killer for no reason at all? How much influence can one person have over another? So many questions and I feel we should be left with these questions. Life often isn’t tied up with a neat bow and sometimes we need reminding of that. It screams that life isn’t fair and sometimes there isn’t a reason why someone is the way they are, or maybe you have to dig deeper to find that reason, formulating theory based on what you have to work with. However, don’t let me have you believe that there isn’t a satisfying conclusion, there is, and it’s a whopper.

It’s harder to speak further on these talking points without disclosing more of the storyline which would in turn throw spoilers in. I don’t want to ruin this book for you so I won’t go there.

For those who love a psychological thriller that draws you in deeply and will leave you pondering over the characters for long after, this book is a definite must read. I found it gripping and compelling.

For a book involving murder it wasn’t that graphic (or maybe I’ve just read too much horror and crime) so if you’re of a squeamish disposition, I’d say you’ll be fine with this book. Don’t blame me if your not though – disclaimer – haha. It is psychologically disturbing though but then again, it’s a psychological thriller, so that’s a big win and to be expected!

Thanks for reading!
