Biography

Selene Kallan is a fantasy author who daydreams about her imaginary worlds most of the time. Her obsession with vampires and all things supernatural has made her an avid reader. She loves writing, discovering new Metal bands, and watching superhero movies. Her debut novel Starlight (Immortal Heritage #1) was released in October 27 2017. She is also feeling a little crazy while writing about herself in third person, but apparently, this the way to go.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

I do. It’s called Hybrid Civilization (working title). It’s a sci-fi story with mind-invading aliens and lots of action.

What is your favorite under-appreciated novel?

Keys of the Origin, by Melissa A Joy. A blend of epic, high, and grimdark fantasy with stunning worldbuilding, non-stop action, and memorable characters.

Who are your favorite authors?

Melissa A Joy, Laurie Forest, and Rick Riordan. Well, I can only hope one day I can write action scenes as epic as Melissa and Laurie, and be as inclusive and sassy as Rick.

Music or silence?

Music, definitely. Kamelot, Within Temptation, Three Days Grace, Linkin Park, Nightwish… these amazing bands are a great source of inspiration.

What is your favorite genre and why?

Fantasy and all it’s subgenres: paranormal, urban, epic, YA. I love supernatural creatures, and angels and demons.

Could you tell us a bit about your books?

The Immortal Heritage saga is about supernatural, star-crossed lovers.

My debut novel, Starlight, follows Nick and Dahlia, two broken-hearted supernaturals that meet at high school (I know, I know, sounds familiar). They must get over each other’s fears and prejudices to become friends, and then something more. Their relationship is forbidden and will unleash chaos for both. Dark, blood tainted secrets will emerge and jeopardize both of their lives.

Haunted, book 2, follows Lily, a lycan-faerie hybrid that lives in a small town with her mother, hiding from her abusive father who wants to turn her into a weapon aimed against vampires and other species. Vampires and lycans have been at war with each other for thousands of years. The feud has died down, but some still want revenge, like Lily’s father. Matt arrives in town and he forms a connection and a friendship with Lily fast, but both are hiding too many secrets. When these secrets are laid bare, will they be able to forgive each other?

What genre do you consider your book(s)? Have you considered writing in another genre?

A blend of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and dark fantasy. I am playing around with the idea of a romance duology.

What gives you inspiration for your book(s)? How did you come up with the idea for Starlight? Tell us about your writing process and the way you brainstorm story ideas.

Inspiration comes from music mainly. Oh, the weird and fascinating visions I’ve had while listening to a good song. I have a very visual imagination. Underworld has also been influential. I LOVE the way vampires are portrayed in Underworld. Selene and Sonja are the coolest vampire females ever! Well, aside from Valentine and Malina, my awesome queens of the night.

I get most of the concept at once. I know how things end, but the journey… It’s always a surprise. I write down a sort of summary and work from there.

Do you want each book to stand on its own or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

The Immortal Heritage Saga will crossover with a few other works, kinda like the MCU. Each saga will be self-contained but there will be crossovers. I love this because it allows for a different perspective of all the characters. I have vampires, Faes, lycans, demons, hybrids, Asteri (angels) and syrens, so far. Watching them interact with each other is fun!

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

Tough one. Lily and Dahlia, because they are so similar and yet so different. Dahlia is much less explosive and more quiet than Lily. And in return, Lily is extroverted and uses humor to hide what she is really feeling. Both will strike down whoever dares to hurt their loved ones and won’t hesitate to put themselves in danger if necessary.

Thanks so much for your candid answers, Selene. I’m reading Starlight at the moment and am thoroughly enjoying it. Can’t wait for that first kiss! I’m glad to hear it’s going through another edit, though ;).
