Excerpt

“That night, this fine conversationalist and excellent dancer dressed in black, jumped the fence between their lands and found a safe place to watch the back of the Rothborn house. There was a full moon, so he thought it a good chance the gardener would shoot him long before Penelope escaped her prison. But he waited patiently, and near midnight, a ghostly white cloud swept low over the lawn and entered the garden. From his perch in the tree, he didn’t lose sight of the white for almost a minute and now had a fix on the area to search.

“He was tempted to return in the morning since he knew the gardener to have a fairly good aim with a gun. However, Mrs. Rothborn wouldn’t accept visitors until four and given the gardener’s systematic search of that day, he feared the man might find the pups before he arrived. So, he made a deal with God, that if He could just get him out of this without being shot, John promised not to kill the pups, no matter how ugly and repulsive they might be.

“He found the pups, but with both parents baring their fangs, rescue looked impossible. He decided he’d just remain until morning and negotiate with the gardener. In an attempt to sooth both ferocious parents down, he leaned against a statue of cupid and softly explained why the pups couldn’t stay where they were. He reminded Beau there was a nice dry barn on his property and observed Penelope could run another thousand feet if it meant her pups were safe. He also observed it was rather insulting to be growled at and threatened by his own dog, to whom he had always been nothing but kind.

“That observation at least silenced Beauregard’s growl. He reminded Beau of his nice home and fellow dog friends. He observed that Jamie had cried for days when he had gone missing two months before and the boy still walked about looking as if he’d lost his best friend.

“That seemed to touch Beauregard’s heart, and he whimpered in distress. Realizing he had found the hound’s Achilles heel he observed that Jamie would no doubt make those pup the nicest bed, safe from anything that might harm them. He then added that the gardener wasn’t allowed to cross the gate between their properties.

“He shifted slightly which caused both dogs to return to growling. His changed position caused the cupid’s arrow to jab him in the neck. In exasperation, he stood up and declared he was done. He had tried his best but there was nothing he could do, for clearly the dogs and cupid were set against him.

“He was not so angry as to forget his own danger in this stupid folly. Thus, he slowly and carefully made his way to the south side of the garden and eased himself over the fence. It was a roundabout way, and in truth, he got himself turned about and crossed onto his property at the furthest corner of his estate, thus making it a solid hour before he arrived home. He was just about to enter the house when he heard a hound woof and Jamie’s happy voice inside the shed. Jamie’s happiness soon heightened when the boy discovered the pups.

“John remained on the steps of his house, listening to the hammering and banging going on in the shed as Jamie built them a safe haven. Only when Penelope was satisfied her pups were safe, did she leave the barn and head off towards the Rothborn estate. By then it was nearly four a.m. He decided to give his hound one more chance to be a decent fellow. He entered the shed. This time Beauregard came to him with tail wagging, even giving him a fine whimper of an apology. And that was how the fine dancer and conversationalist came to possess the ugliest pups in the world.”

Amy took his hand and kissed it. “Thank you for telling me the whole story.”
