Maids began wearing uniforms in Britain.

Uniforms for British housemaids came into style when going into service was going out of style. Most poor people chose to work in factories once they had the choice. The upper classes came up with the idea of uniforms for their domestic staff because a few people could be tricked into feeling superior to friends, family and neighbours by wearing smart clothes they felt associated them with the wealthy and titled people they served. In time, uniforms became the badge that gave the message: know your place.
