Dear Library

I’ve been really lucky in that I’ve spent quite a bit of time at Penistone Grammar over the past few years. And, every time I’ve been, over two world book days, and loads of workshops, I’ve had the best time. There are some terrifically talented writers there and the English department is a wonderful unit of brilliant, dedicated, smart and friendly people. And bloody good teachers.

It was lacking one thing though… a library.

People, that is changing! Thanks to the efforts of the wonderful Mrs Demetriou, a library is being constructed. Before lockdown I was shown around the space and, honestly, I know it’s going to be something brilliant once it’s done. And YOU CAN HELP! You can add to its brilliance.

How? you ask…

In two ways.

First, you can donate a book, or books. Keep in mind it’s a high school library so things that young people can fall in love with would be wonderful.

Second, you could write a letter. Because Mrs Demetriou wants letters about libraries, or TO libraries to adorn its walls. I love the idea. Utterly. Tell us what you love about them. Recommend some books. Let the young people there know why libraries, and librarians, are important.

If you’d like to be involved (and we’d LOVE you to be) give Mrs D a tweet here.

This is what I wrote. And I loved doing it. Because libraries, and librarians, and books are among the most important and nourishing things there are in this world. They give us opportunities, and peace. They give us inspiration and a place to sit down, happily.

Thanks to librarian, book blogger, and all-round superstar Book Monster Ally for turning my words into the image.
