We have just returned from Cumbria. We love the mountains, lakes, walks through woods, and excellent Cumbrian cooking.
As ever, I gaze at the beautiful scenery, and see the fact of creation shouting out the Presence of the Creator. Romans 1 says that the evidence is so overwhelming, that no-one has any excuse for not believing.
Psalm 121 verse 1 kept coming to mind. The psalmist looks to the hills, and asks rhetorically where his help comes from. ‘The Lord’ is his response. No doubt he was looking to the hills that surround a Jerusalem. Indeed, Jerusalem is built on Mount Moriah, where Abraham sacrificed a ram, and where later The Father saw the Lamb of God sacrificed on the cross.
The Lord created all things, including the hills referred to by the psalmist. Mountains and hills are so strong compared to puny people. So how much stronger is the One Who created them? Infinitely.
I look to the hills. Where does my help come from? From the Lord Who made those hills, and the rest of creation as well. That is my paraphrase of that verse. The Lord has helped me so much, so many times. You need help anytime? – there is no-one better to turn to.
