Common flu versus COVID-19

Dictatorships

In 2019, Australia experienced its worst flu season on record, with more than 310,000 people hospitalized, with over 900 deaths. Yet, there were no lockdowns, shutting businesses and the economy, loss of tens of thousands of jobs, social distancing rules, or imprisoning people in their homes with the resulting family and social problems these measures created.

There are so far 6849 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, with 96 deaths Australia-wide. Despite this, Australian federal and state governments have imposed what is in effect martial law on its citizens. By banning people from gathering in groups also stops protests against these measures. This dangerous precedent is a frightening example how governments can curtail citizen’s rights and freedoms. This is not democracy, but unfeeling autocracy, done in the name of keeping us safe – a catch-cry of all authoritarian regimes.

Everyone should take prudent measures to protect themselves against possible infection, but looking at the statistics of flu v COVOD-19 deaths, governments world-wide have overreacted in the extreme! Time to roll back lockdowns!

Come the next elections, Australians everywhere should look hard at what our politicians have done to us. They have taken away many of our rights and freedoms to ‘protect’ us against non-existent terrorism threats, and they are doing it again with COVID-19. Time to get our freedoms back, or Australia will find itself a democratic country in name only!
