Author Interview: A.R. Kaufer

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?

For me, having a routine definitely helps. I am a full-time author, so I get everything done in the morning before I sit at my laptop to write, market, make covers, engage with readers and other authors, etc.

Do you prefer ebooks, printed books, or audiobooks most of the time?

Hardcovers are my favorite, but I will read an e-book, especially if it’s an ARC.

How important was professional editing to your book’s development?

Very important. Not every author needs a professional editor, but I have author blindness and my editor has been phenomenal.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

Courting Fate is the first of an 8-book series. Courting Destiny comes out June 15th, and I can’t say too much after the way Courting Fate ends, but my beta and ARC readers so far have absolutely loved it.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

I wrote a scene in book 6, that I literally had to shut down my laptop and didn’t write for the rest of the day after. No one died in the scene, but it was a very difficult scene to write, none the less.

What’s your favorite writing snack or drink?

I love to have hot cocoa every day while I am working.

When you’re writing an emotional or difficult scene, how do you set the mood?

I light candles, make a cup of tea, darken the room.

Which of the characters do you relate to the most and why? Would you and your main character get along?

I put these two questions together, because they go together. Ana, my FMC in Courting Fate, is based off me and my C-PTSD, my anxiety, my survival. I’m not sure if we would bond over our trauma or if she would hate me for all the things I put her through, though.

If you were to write a spin-off about a side character, which would you pick?

Kara, Ana’s roommate and best friend, would definitely be my spin-off. Readers don’t even really learn her backstory until Book 8, and that is bonus material not part of the story itself.
