1. What inspired the idea for your book?
The inspiration for Earth Protectors came from a desire to create a story that not only captured the essence of adventure and self-discovery but also addressed real-world themes like environmental responsibility. I wanted to weave my love for imaginative storytelling with the idea that young people can make a significant difference, no matter how small or unseen they might feel.
2. How did you come up with the title of your book?
The title Earth Protectors came naturally because it perfectly reflects the core of the story: a group of teenagers tasked with the monumental responsibility of saving Earth. The title captures the gravity of their mission, and I felt it was the best fit for the story’s theme of protecting the planet from total annihilation.
3. How do you develop your plot and characters?
I begin with the characters—what drives them, their fears, and their strengths. For Earth Protectors, Tommy Archer is the heart of the story. Once I have a clear sense of who the characters are, I build the plot around their growth, making sure the conflicts they face help shape them. It’s important to me that the characters’ decisions drive the story forward, rather than the plot forcing them to act a certain way.
4. How long have you been writing or when did you start?
My passion for writing began in high school when I was inspired by a writing competition I never entered but always wished I had. That unfulfilled desire to participate pushed me to create my own stories. Over time, that spark turned into a passion, leading me to write two books, starting with what I call “drawer plays”—unpublished works that were, in hindsight, pretty terrible! However, the positive feedback from friends and adults helped encourage me to pursue writing seriously.
5. What part of the book was the most fun to write?
The most fun part to write was when Tommy first began to realize that he was not just an ordinary kid. That moment when he had his first encounter with a creature he never envisaged to see. There’s so much excitement and discovery, and I felt like I was discovering it right along with him.
6. Why did you write this particular book?
A part of me wanted to see myself in the story, so I created a character who reflects bits of my own life’s experiences. Writing Earth Protectors was a way to channel those reflections into an imaginative adventure, incorporating themes that resonate with me like friendship, courage, and self-discovery.
7. What risks have you taken with your writing that have paid off?
One of the biggest risks I took was blending elements of reality with a world of fantasy and not shying away from tackling themes that young readers face in real life. Issues like bullying, self-doubt, and finding one’s purpose are woven into the fantastical storyline. It was a delicate balance, but it’s been rewarding to see readers connect with these themes.
8. If your Main Character could answer, why would they say we should read your book?
Tommy would probably say you should read the book because it’s not just about saving the world but about discovering the hero within yourself. Everyone has fears and insecurities, but it’s about facing them head-on. He’d tell you that this is a story of friendship, courage, and standing up for what’s right—even when the odds are stacked against you.
9. What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?
Write the story that’s in your heart, not the one you think people want to read. Be persistent—there will be moments of doubt, but finishing that first draft is an accomplishment in itself. Don’t rush the process. Editing and rewriting are where your story will truly come alive.
10. What, to you, are the most important elements of good writing?
For me, good writing captures the reader emotionally. Whether it’s through vivid descriptions, complex characters, or an engaging plot, it needs to make the reader feel something. Clarity is also imperative, making sure the reader understands and connects with the world you’ve created. Lastly, pacing. A good story keeps readers turning the page, wanting to know what happens next..
