Author Interview: Elora Canne

What inspired the idea for your book?

The opening scene of Love & Laughter is from a real-life event, with my neighbour on his knees in his garden when I walked past.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

The main character’s daughter comes to visit for a sticky-beak into her mum’s romantic interest.
Secondary characters will be coming together as unlikely couples.
There will be a death in the community.

What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?

The characters of Pelican Cove forced their own way into relationships, whereas originally, my intention was one romantic rendezvous.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I go people-watching!

What characters in your book are most similar to you or to people you know?

Basically all of them! There are aspects of my personality in each female character plus close friends. My husband (don’t tell him haha), has characteristics featured in the main male character.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

Definitely the characters, because they drive the narrative and, therefore, the plot.

If you could meet your characters, what would you say to them?

Thank you for writing this story.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Coffee and complete silence.

What is the best money you’ve ever spent with regard to your writing?

The best editor I can afford.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Going for long walks, paddle-boarding and reading. Basically alone time, I’m an introvert.
